Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment: A Creative Hub and Cultural Oasis
We are a sprawling art facility in a historic textile mill in Huntsville, Alabama. Our community is making big strides for art by asking the question: "How can we do better by artists?"
Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment is a rare place to be an artist. One of our bylines is that we are the largest privately-owned arts facility in the nation, but what does that really mean? To us, it means we are a facility that can ask ourselves everyday, "how can we do better by artists?" With over 250 working artist studios here, we expect this question to be a moving target. Our community has gotten good at adapting and innovating as we go. It turns this sprawling historic textile mill into a vibrant and dynamic space for art. Situated in Huntsville, Alabama where so many of us are scientists. We hope to offer this city of philogynists (lovers of logic) an oasis for culture and expression.
Historical Background

Originally built in 1901, Lowe Mill played a crucial role in the industrial landscape of Huntsville. Over the years, the textile mill fell into disuse. In 2001, Jim Hudson was the visionary who saw the potential. The building is a stunning example of southern industrialization. Those of us that grow up here are familiar with these preservation efforts. We are used to coffee shops in old overall factories and auditoriums in antique train stations. It looks and feels quintessentially southern in so many ways. To pair this with an art facility of this size is groundbreaking.
Artistic Diversity

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment is not your typical art gallery. It's a sprawling complex that houses over 200 working studios for artists and makers of all disciplines. Visitors can explore a vast array of artistic expressions, from traditional paintings and sculptures to cutting-edge digital art and experimental installations. This community represents a wide spectrum of backgrounds, disciplines, and styles, creating an environment where creativity knows no bounds.
Fine Arts
Our facilities house MFA artists of every discipline who are doing truly groundbreaking work. We hope to offer these artists independence in their creativity. And we hope that creates opportunities for innovation. If we are a place where creators feel safe going out on a limb, we are doing our jobs right. Offering an artist license for expression is our highest calling. We hope it helps these artists to experiment and push their own limits.
Interactive Experience
What sets Lowe Mill A&E apart is its commitment to providing an interactive and immersive experience for visitors. The studios are not hidden away; they are open to the public. As visitors walk through the halls, they can walk into studios they didn't even know to come see. They can ask the artist for the stories behind their work. This unique approach breaks down the traditional barriers between artists and their audiences. The programs and events invite the community to be apart of the art in a rare and exciting way.
