Be a Part of our Team
Lowe Mill A&E is a revolving door of art installations, events, and art classes. What we do is impossible without community support. We have a huge vision for 2024. Join our team to make it happen.
Lowe Mill A&E is the largest privately-owned arts facility in the nation. We believe we are the most dynamic space asking, “How can we do right by artists?” The opportunities we create for artists and creative entrepreneurs in North Alabama, Greater Appalachia, and the Southeastern U.S. are invaluable to the goal of keeping art sustainable.
How do we do it?
We work tirelessly and we don’t do it alone. Our small office staff employs contractors, accepts volunteers, and receives so much support from our community - often unsolicited.
Community Support
We are consistently touched at how much this facility means to the people in Huntsville, Alabama. Last year, a friend of The Mill, Jerry Berg, asked our Executive Director how we could plant more trees on the property. If you have never physically been to Lowe Mill A&E, we have 190,000 square feet of a historic textile mill to occupy with artists and art. We sit on 18 acres. There is so much more room for trees, but as you can imagine, there are a lot of demands on our budget.
Our director, Marcia (who works dawn to dusk to keep our gears turning), asked the same of Mr. Berg: “How can we plant more trees with our parameters?” And Mr. Berg found out how. He heard Frank Williams at Lander’s McLarty Subaru was extensively involved with Friends of Trees, an organization that raises money for just this purpose. They came last month and put them in the ground. This is just one example of how our facility is held and nurtured by the community. It takes so much to make this happen and we don’t do it alone.
What Comes Next
We have a huge vision over the next 10 years. This year we are taking on an artist with a medium new to us: blacksmithing. We are working hard to build a forge. Right this second, there is a college-educated glass blower in Mobile. We are raising money to create the specific facility they need. Ravenwood Meadery needs space to expand and host clients in a larger room. If you can believe it, we have more space available to us. The historic boiler room needs a new roof, but is otherwise sound. We are raising money to restore that beautiful building and make it a place for this incredible business to thrive.
